New EV Simulated Shifting Tech to Feature Ability to Jiggle Shifter

"Even though it actually accomplishes nothing, it makes me feel more… alive."

FOUNTAIN VALLEY—In a bid to cater to driving purists, a new EV simulated shifting technology will now include a feature allowing drivers to jiggle the shifter. The innovation, developed by ShiftTronic Industries, aims to replicate the tactile experience of driving manual transmission cars—something absolutely necessary for all petrolheads transitioning to EVs.

"One of the biggest complaints we’ve heard from drivers moving to EVs is the loss of interaction with the vehicle," said Alejandro Vargas, lead engineer at ShiftTronic. “The simple act of jiggling the shifter gives drivers a sense of control and engagement. We had to bring that experience into the EV world or risk drivers going mad.”

The new system offers simulated gear shifts as well as the option to wiggle the shifter while the car is idling, mimicking the nervous, impatient, and neurotic habit many drivers exhibit in manual cars. While the gears aren’t real and the movement is purely cosmetic, early testers say the psychological effect is undeniable

“I didn’t realize how much I missed the feeling of jiggling my shifter,” said 34-year-old enthusiast Rafael Soto, who recently drove an EV prototype featuring the tech. “Even though it actually accomplishes nothing, it makes me feel more… alive.”

The feature has also sparked debate among EV enthusiasts. "Why simulate something that doesn't actually matter?" argued Marta Rodríguez, an EV advocate. "Next thing they're going to say they want their hand brakes back."

ShiftTronic’s new technology is expected to roll out in select EV models later this year, offering a fresh take on bridging pointless habits and old technology.
