WILLOW SPRINGS, CA—Just hours after completing his first-ever track day, 29-year-old Jason “JaySpeed” Moreno has officially begun his hunt for motorsports sponsorship—despite finishing the day 3 seconds off pace and spending most of it trying to figure out where the pit lane ends.
“I think it’s time to take the next step,” said Moreno, still wearing a damp Sparco suit and holding a really old GoPro. “I’ve proven I can drive. Now I just need someone to believe in the vision.”
That “vision,” according to Jason, includes an Instagram page with 312 followers, two edited clips set to trap music, and a dream of getting free tires from a brand that has no idea who he is.
“I got a clean lap in by the third session,” Moreno explained. “The guy in the Miata waved me by, and I felt that. That’s when I knew: this is bigger than me.”
Track officials remember it differently. “He spun in the paddock trying to wave at his friend,” said safety coordinator Amanda Ng. “Then he came to the tower asking if we had Red Bull’s phone number.”
Sponsorship veteran Chris Delgado, who actually races wheel-to-wheel and has several small backing deals, weighed in. “I’ve been racing for eight years and still pay for my own brake pads,” Delgado said. “Meanwhile, this guy drives one barely decent lap in his daily and thinks Monster Energy is gonna show up with a duffel bag of money? Wild.”
Moreno remains undeterred. He’s already begun designing a “media kit” featuring action shots of his Kia Rio with the license plate blurred out as if anyone wants to look him up. “I’m pitching to tire companies, steering wheel brands, anyone really,” he said. “I think there’s a real market for semi-consistent begineer-group pace.”
As for what he’s offering sponsors in return? “Exposure. I have a YouTube channel in the works. Probably going to post once a month. Maybe bi-monthly if I get that new drone.”
Despite a complete lack of results, network, or equipment, Moreno is confident. “Look, I may not have the fastest lap,” he said. “But I’ve got the attitude, the merch ideas, and a hunger for greatness. Also my Venmo is @JaySpeedMotorsport, just in case.”
